Dr. Sopko earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree and his advanced certification in Endodontics from the University of Maryland. He brings a wealth of academic knowledge to his work, having served as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Endodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2006 to 2019, where he trained the next generation of dental professionals.

Dr. Robert P. Sopko has been practicing dentistry in the Triangle area for over 22 years.
Education & Early Recognition
Dr. Sopko is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where he majored in Biology and was inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He then earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Maryland on a partial scholarship. He graduated dental school with honors, receiving special recognition from the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
Following dental school, Dr. Sopko completed a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During this time, he received advanced clinical and didactic training across all disciplines of dentistry. He developed a strong passion for endodontics and, under the guidance of renowned faculty members including Dr. Martin Trope, was able to treat highly complex endodontic cases.
General Practice & Advanced Specialization
After completing his general residency, Dr. Sopko practiced general dentistry in Cary, NC. Over the course of four years in private practice, he continued to cultivate his expertise in endodontics through daily clinical practice and extensive continuing education.
Driven by his passion for the specialty, he returned to academia to attend the postgraduate endodontic residency and graduate school at the University of Maryland. While there, he actively participated in the Edward C. Penick Endodontic Study Club, which hosted world-renowned endodontic speakers and innovators.
Teaching & Professional Affiliations
Upon earning his specialty certificate in endodontics, Dr. Sopko returned to North Carolina to enter private specialized practice. Deeply committed to dental education, he joined the Department of Endodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he proudly serves as a Clinical Adjunct Professor. He thoroughly enjoys teaching clinical endodontics to both undergraduate dental students and postgraduate endodontic residents.
